Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Mohamed Salleh Mohamed Yasin



Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Dato' Dr Mohamed Salleh began his career as a lecturer in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 1980. He was actively involved in producing laboratory diagnostic kits for a variety of fungal diseases such as Candidiasis , Aspergillosis, and Cryptococcosis. His publication and research centred  on ‘Fungal Diseases in the Immunocompromised’. He was promoted as Professor in 1992.  He was appointed as Head of the Medical Microbiology and Immunology Department  in 1985 and as Deputy Dean of Academic Affairs in the Faculty of Medicine, UKM in 1990. He played a major role in the  establishment of the first Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS) in Malaysia. He became the founder Dean for FAHS, UKM in 1992 till 1995, when he was appointed to become the Deputy Vice-Chancellor  from 1995-2000 . He was subsequently appointed UKM’s Vice-Chancellor in May 2003 until he retired in August 2006. He was the Past President of the Malaysian Society of Infectious Diseases and Chemotherapy. 

He is currently serving as Founder Director, United Nations University – International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH).  The mission of UNU-IIGH is to undertake research, capacity development and dissemination of knowledge related to key issues of human health.  The Institute seeks to contribute to the development and strengthening of health services policy frameworks and management actions, particularly for people in developing countries, and to support implementation of promotive approach to human health. Among the objectives of UNU-IIGH are to enhance efficiency, quality, access and equity in the delivery of healthcare services, to undertake and strengthen research in global health towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to facilitate dissemination of information and innovation on global health to developing countries, to build and enhance capacities crucial in addressing global health issues especially in developing countries and to promote networking among research institutions in developed and developing countries.

 

For his contributions to education development and society, he was conferred a Dato’ Setia Negeri Sembilan (DSNS) and a Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM) awards.
